More tourists to Thai as situation improved

BANGKOK - Department of Tourism (DOT) said twenty-six million tourists are projected to visit the country this year, as improved situation convinces more tourists.

The projection was based on the June tourist arrivals which showed a recovery after the military take-over. Only in the fourth week of June, a total of 54,469 tourists visited the country, up from 49,052 in the first week, or a jump of 11.04 percent.

This reflects the improved political situation, said director general of DOT Arnupap Gaesornsuwan.

He said it is now confident of achieving its annual target of 26 million foreign tourists.

From January to June this year, a total of 11,776,494 tourists arrived and generated 547.196 billion baht to the country, a decline of 9.91% and 6.56% respectively from the same period last year.

Among the visiting tourists, Chinese, Australian, and Laotian nationals were the top three he said.
