Myanmar journalists sentenced to 10 years with hard labour


MYANMAR : -- Pakokku Court on Thursday jailed four journalists and the CEO of the Unity journal to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour, for reporting allegations that the country military in Magwe Division was being used to manufacture chemical weapons, The Irrawaddy reported.

The journalist's lawyer, Robert San Aung, said that the decision would be appealed.

Five journalists are in military custody they were detained by Special Branch police shortly after the Jan 25 publication report about the facility, which included photographs of the alleged chemical weapons film.

Journalist's lawyer Robert San Aung said that decision should go accordingly with the Media Law,” he said, referring to the recently passed legislation, which does not include prison terms for journalists found to have breached the law in their jobs.
