Commerce And Exporters To Cooperate To Join Manila’s Rice Auction
THAILAND : -- Rice Exporters Are To Join Hands With The Commerce Ministry To Try To Secure A Huge Rice Contract With The Philippines.
Pol Lt Charoen Laothammathat, president of Thai Rice Exporters Association, disclosed Sunday that the Philippine government was to call an auction for the purchase of 500,000 tonnes of 25 percent rice.
He said that Vietnam which used to be the supplier was expected to join the auction but would not be able to fulfil the entire demand and, as such, there would be a good chance for Thailand to fill the void as Thai rice is currently 20 US dollars per tonne less than Vietnamese grains.
The Philippines wanted 25 percent rice and there was a shortage of the grains among other sellers except Thailand. If Thailand is to win the rice bid, he noted that it is necessary that the rice exporters will have to cooperate with the Commerce Ministry. He said.
Pol Lt Charoen predicted that Thailand would be able to export between 700,000-800,000 tonnes of rice per month for the remaining five months because Vietnam does not have enough supply while demand for rice among the three buyers namely Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia remains high.
It is expected that Thailand will be able to export more than nine million tonnes of rice throughout the year this year which is beyond the target earlier set.
