Clinic Closes After Surrogacy Scandal




THAILAND : -- A clinic which involved in the unusual cases of nine babies born from nine Thai surrogate mothers and a Japanese businessman was abandoned with no staff working. 

Ministry of public Health accompanied by police searched an  In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) clinic reputed to have carried out the operation for the second time Friday to look for more evidences.

The clinic was found abandoned.

Police said that they managed to gather information on the father of the children. The Japanese man is rumored to have fathered at least 14 children and has entered the country 41 times.

The abandoned clinic doctors performed surrogacy service for all nine children with one father, Shigeta Mitsutoki, a 24 year old Japanese male.

Doctor Boonruang Trairuangworarat, the director-general of the Health Service Support Department, said the IVF clinic was located on Wireless road in Bangkok.

He said  the clinic was legally registered but was not certified by the Royal Thai College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to perform assisted reproductive operations.

The clinic has been in operation since August 2011 and is believed to have performed no less than 100 surrogacy operations for various clients.
